1. The Sulfated ash test method (ASTM D 874) has long been used as a quantitative measure of the ash forming metallic constituents in the lubricating oils and additives. to To measure sulfated ash in lubricants by igniting the sample burning it in a crucible until only ash and carbon remain.
2. The Ashing Furnace mainly applies to unused lubricating oils containing additives and from additive concentrates in biodiesel. The sample is ignited and burned in a crucible until only ash and carbon remain. After cooling, the residue is treated with sulfuric acid and heated at 775°C until carbon oxidation is complete. The ash is then cooled, re-treated with sulfuric acid, and heated at 775°C to constant weight. The final weight is the sulfated ash content.
