Cone penetrometers are used to determine the moisture content at which clay soils pass from a plastic to a liquid state (the liquid limit). The result can also be used to evaluate the undrained shear strength. Model CT-M Cone Penetrometer test method for Liquid Limit is based on the relationship between the moisture content and the penetration of a cone into a soil sample.
