GD-2801C Adhesive Glue / Lubricating Grease Testing Penetrometer 


Introduction:

1. The penetrometer is applied to petroleum products and for consistency tests on a wide range of food products, cosmetics, pastes and other solid to semisolid products. 
2. Cone penetration is considered the most important of the laboratory-performed tests. While this ASTM test method provides a measure of grease consistency or stiffness, it is not well-suited for used grease, as it requires a large sample, which precludes its use for in-service testing.
3. The cone penetration method employs a weighted cone that is dropped into a fixed-size volume of grease for a defined time period. The depth that the cone is able to penetrate the grease is used to rate the grease's consistency with a scale developed by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI). This test utilizes three different cup and cone sizes.
4. The degree to which a highly viscous or creamy, pasty, semi-solid sample resists deformation by an applied force and the measure of consistency is called penetration.
To determine the consistency of grease for example, a penetration measurement is taken by allowing a cone assembly of a given weight to sink into the grease for a determined amount of time at a determined temperature. The depth to which tho cone sinks into the grease is the penetration. The deeper the cone sinks the softer the material is.
