Total Sulfur Test in Light Hydrocarbons and Engine Fuel by ASTM D5453Test Significance:
Sulfur plays a negative role in the production processes of refineries. Process catalysts used in petroleum and chemical refining can be poisoned when trace amounts of sulfur bearing materials are contained in the feedstocks. The sulfur is being removed from petroleum distillates to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions when fossil fuels are combusted and in order to protect catalysts in the refining process. Regulating bodies have set challenging low levels of allowed Sulfur concentrations in fuels to protect the environment.
Total Sulfur Test by UV-Fluorescence provides superior repeatability and the highest accuracy. The lowest possible uncertainty of the actual concentration provides better insight over the sulfur content during analysis.
Standards:
ASTM D5453 Method specifically for the petroleum industry, covering the determination of the total sulfur content in liquid petroleum products by ultraviolet fluorescence detection.
ASTM D5453 Formula: The maximum Std dev for 9 mg/kg Sulfur is 0.5 mg/kg (Std dev ≤ 1.5 * (r / 2.77)). At the level of 9.0 mg/kg, r=0.93 based on the formula r=0.1788*.75.
